Given that activation is supposed to work at least 3 times per key, you can do a full build as if this were to be handed to a user, then Sysprep it, which will probably result in that particular machine needing to activate again, but that shouldn't be a problem.Īutomatic Updates appears to function perfectly fine without activation or validation. So, you can manually install things pre-activation, but looks like any automation provided by the Windows Update site itself is blocked. Windows Update installed, but when executing a check, attempted to force a Genuine Advantage validation, which failed because the key hadn't been activated. Entered key, did not activate after first boot. OK, I found an old XP retail disk (no SP, OEM, bought for a one-off build for something or other). I'd be happy to help in person off the clock if you need assistance with the cloning. (The laptops are Dell Latitude D620s, for the record.) What do people recommend as an efficient way to get this done? (Free tools are a requirement - my budget for this is $0 ) I don't have much experience with this sort of thing the closest I've come to it is when I used to make slipstreamed unattended-install XP discs so that I wouldn't have to reinstall everything when I reformatted. And then presumably change the License Key on each one so that they don't all use a single license key? It seems to me like the fastest thing to do is just prepare a single perfect install of Windows XP (with all software), clone it, install it on the other 9 - they all have wifi and ethernet, so a network install is an option. What we want to accomplish: have 10 fully-updated Windows XP installations with individual Windows XP license keys, a volume-licensed installation of Office 2007, and an up-to-date installation of Microsoft Security essentials. We have 10 individual licenses for Windows XP and a volume license for Windows Office 2007. They are the exact same models and are in identical (read: stock) configurations. Situation: I have 10 laptops that have been donated to my charity organization.
